The Society of Television Engineers is a unique organization that embraces the television industry and key individuals involved in the areas of television broadcast engineering and the manufacture of television broadcast equipment. It is unique to the Los Angeles and surrounding areas. It was started in 1940 by chief engineers of Los Angeles independent and network-owned television stations.The purpose of the STE was, and still is, to provide a common ground for key engineering personnel to get together and discuss common technical problems, and to help each other solve them.
Originally, the organization was limited to 10 active members and was mostly involved with television broadcast transmitter equipment and operation.
Over the years, it has grown to encompass technologies related to all phases of the television broadcast industry, including main transmitter operation, remote and studio production, post production, and electronic news gathering. At present there are 60 members.
STE now has unlimited active membership which includes individuals, associated with network and independent television stations, and television production and post-production facilities, whose offices are located in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. Active membership also includes individuals involved in the design and manufacture of broadcast television equipment and associated products, whose offices are located in the Los Angeles area.
STE dinner meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month, July and August excluded.
Meeting activities include a social cocktail hour, a formal dinner, a table-by-table industry event reports and introduction of guests. This is followed by a formal program that covers new or interesting television broadcast systems, standards, products, or techniques.
Dinner meeting attendance is usually from 90 to 150 individuals, the majority of which are key people in the television broadcast industry.
